Will the Dynamic series work for me?

Post  Sean on Thu May 28, 2009 8:16 am

I currently have Mirage Omni 250's towers, Omni CC, and I think Omni 150's for surround duty. I built an Acoupower 15" sub tuned to 17.5hz last summer so now Im ready to replace the rest of my speaker. I like the Dynamic series but her is my concern. The reciever is an Onkyo TX SR 605 it rated for 6 ohm and 8 ohm speakers @ 100 watts per channel. It seems like most diy speakers run at 4 ohm's which my Onkyo wont like too much. I have read of some people running them at 4 ohms some with good results and some not so much. I have my eye on Emotiva to replace the Onkyo but I would like to spend my money on the speakers first since I cant do it all at one time.

Here is the other concern. I would like to build the 4cc first with the hopes of my Onkyo be able to drive different speakers with different ohm load. Can I do that? After I save more cash I want to build the 4T's then the 1s's

90% of the time these will be used for HT so I hope they will perform with great impact for movies.

Any advise would be great

Thanks

Sean

Here are some pic's of my family room.

Hi there. Here's the good news for you- the Dynamic 4CC, 2CC, 4T, and 2T are all 8ohm speakers. I specifically took some of the shortfalls in DIY design and made sure I had speakers that everyday receivers could drive. They also are fairly efficient speakers so you should have more than enough power with 100W.

The 4T and 4CC speakers have four 8 ohm woofers wired in a parallel series connection. That gives a final load of 8 ohms. The 2T and 2CC use the 4 ohm RS180-4 wired in series to net 8 ohms.

Most DIY designs use 8 ohm drivers wired in parallel. The result is 4 ohms and usually a bit under that when the passive crossover is put into the circuit.

Also if you want to purchase one set of speakers at a time I'd be more than happy to do that. You can buy as much as you want at a time as long as it's either a complete or partial kit listed in the online sale page at my webiste. Other options we can discuss via PM or email if you want something custom etc.

Thank you for posting and if I can be of any further assistance with your speaker building decisions don't hesitate to ask.

Regards,

Jed

Also, I wouldn't worry about having some speakers in the HT as 4 ohm and 8 ohm given a good amp.

I'm glad to hear your design will work for me. Another question....will I have the choice to either connect the speakers BI-amp or normal to my reciever.

Thanks

I have a layout for the crossover if you want to bi-amp. When you order you can let me know and I'll make the board custom for your application. It could be biamped or not just by putting some binding post jumpers in place on the speaker terminals. Normally the speakers are setup for single amp operation but the wiring configuration is possible for no charge.
