New M5W 3-way speaker released!

Post  Clearwave on Sun Dec 14, 2008 7:33 am

I think this speaker will be a smash hit for those wanting high end performance at a very affordable price. It uses the Vifa XT25 double magnet tweeter, SB Acoustics 5" mid, and Dayton RS270s woofers, and shallow slope crossovers with a very nice flat FR. These are just a joy to listen to. They use the same box format as the Duet10ss, the only thing they give up is the lesser price tag, and a not quite as much detail and bass extension as the Duet10ss. For the money they are a fantastic value. With the Duet10ss, you get what you pay for, but the M5W comes close! Pics coming soon.

Well, I was wrong I guess. There hasn't been much interest in this speaker for some reason, even though it is quite special IMO. Great synergy with this speaker and totally worth every penny.

I'll sell the demo drivers I used and the finished crossovers for $450 (pair) if anyone is interested.

I know I for one am very interested in these speakers and was wondering if you still had that demo set of drivers available for $450. It looks like a fantastic deal for such high performance speakers. The only reason that I can think that these would not be very popular is the size. Fortunately I dont really have size constraints. Very Happy

What's the sensitivity on this design? I'm surprised it's not more popular - I wonder if people realize that RS270 moves as much air as THREE RS180s

It's ~87db per 1 watt and 8ohms.

I thought I'd quote akcrusier from htguide.com. I hope you don't mind because I really wanted to share your great build here as well. Awesome job!

akcrusier wrote:I have been a lurker on this forum for about a year looking for a pair of speakers to build. Jed seems to be held in high regard around here and I liked his design philosophy (not many 3 ways have 10" woofers) anyway around Christmas I picked up his demo pair of M5W's (which have a XT25, SBA5", and RS270) for $450. At the same time I picked up one of DIY cable's 18" Mal-X's and decided to do a matching build. Anyway I finally finished with both last night and I am quite happy. They replace a bose wave radio so there really is no comparison.... They are driven by a preamp, DAC, and amp which were all DIYed. The speakers and sub are veneered in a pommele Makore with about 6 coats of clear gloss over it. This was my first DIY audio project, so I would just like to thank all who regularly contribute here (there is some great information) and Jed. I cant really imagine a better sounding speaker for $450.
