Also is there a trick to tighten does quick connects. Once installed they seem a little loose, not really snug.
BTW I went with 12ga for woofers and 14ga for tweeters and mids finally

Incorrect, the shortest length of the 2" Precision Port is 5" if you don't use the center tube. I use the 2 flared ends and one connector ring. I crimp quick connects very gently to get the desired tightness. I do that before they are inserted on the terminal.

That was dumb. I think that is a sign to stop for the day. Massive headache, I think it's after soldering the crossovers. Always scares me, but all went great(hope it works when plugged). BTW if the sonic barrier is all the way down to the bottom the crossovers won't fit. I will need to cut off approx 1-2'' from the bottom.
For the centers they are in the back of the mid chambers( more than enough room).
The sonic barrier I had just enough to put on the exterior wall behind the mid chambers for both the 4cc and 4T. Not enough to do the tops. 1/2" also was just right. I filled the back with poly fill. I bought a 4lbs bag and will probably have half left when all done. doesn't compact much and fills up nicely.
I will be putting more pics and build info on ht guide soon.

I've been working on the 1S all day. Gotta get that done before the custom orders start rolling in again.

Solder fumes are not good for the health. Hope your headache goes away because this is supposed to be fun!

soldering terminals

Post  aqus on Mon Feb 23, 2009 3:17 am

For the 14 gauge wire going to the tweeters and mids, I am thinning the wire with solder then as it is still hot I put the terminal on, then when it cools I use my crimping tool.
Do you see an inconvenience doing it this way. I know the connection to the terminal is considered a cold solder but I guess crimping it after should give me a good connection. They seem super solid doing it this way , just wondering about connectivity.
For the 12guage wire since I can easily remove the insulator I crimp first then solder and heat shrink, or electrical tape when I forget heatshrink Smile.

I crimp directly onto the wire. Why crimp onto cold solder? I guess if you heat it up again it might be okay. Though, ideally, I would solder the connectors after they are crimped- although that isn't necessary with a good crimped connection.

Here are some pictures of my finished build. More can be found at htguide, and also on photobucket which has all pictures.
Hope others enjoy building these as much as I did.

Burritts Rapids is 40 minutes south west of Ottawa along the Rideau River. Unfortunately, a friend and I will be off Tuesday for a 4 or 5 day snowmobile trip. If you can swing out Monday though, you are welcome to drop in and listen to my 2 Ts and chat about speaker building.

Take care, Rick.

Hi Rick,

I've been exploring possibilities on building speakers and Jed's 4CC and 4T look like the things I'm after. This may seem like an odd request from somone you don't even know, but I would love to drop by with my wife some time and hear your custom speakers! We live about an hour west from Ottawa in White Lake, so you're not too far away in Burritts Rapids. In fact, as a kid, I used to ride my bicycle from Blossom Park, Gloucester, to Burritts Rapids to go fishing!

Anyway, you can email me at bka (and then the "at" sign) tallpinetree ("dot") com.

Cheers
